I recently realized that nearly everything I wrote as a journalist is subject to being lost over time. No one is going to keep old newspapers and magazines around forever, and they’ll eventually be tossed, along with my articles. To preserve my stories for my family, I’ve gathered this collection from my 48 years as a student and professional—my adventures in journalism—along with the memories the stories evoked. Most of my articles came during the thirty years I worked at the National Geographic Society, where I had the chance to write about many fascinating destinations. I also wrote about an incredible range of technical subjects, including our five senses, advances in modern medicine, the basics of earth science, and the history of photography. My best stories were about travel and culture. I wrote a few of those while I was working on National Geographic books, but most came during the years that I served as the managing editor and executive editor of Traveler magazine.
